"There is no such thing as an instant leader." - Bill George
It's important to remember that everything comes from humble beginnings. In most cases, the starting line is not the point at which a race gets underway. The only way to get ahead and accomplish things is to work for it. Nobody ever made it to the pinnacle of success without first overcoming insurmountable odds and suffering a great deal of pain.[1] Everyone is unique in their own special way, with skills, interests, and personality traits that set them apart from the rest.
Rather than focusing on becoming a "perfect leader," the author emphasizes that real leaders lead by example. A leader, rather than blindly following the standard, must lay out his own vision for how to best manage his troops. All great leaders have struggled with doubt, uncertainty, and confusion before they establish themselves among their subordinates. It's inevitable that leaders will face difficult situations. Decision making, accountability, and responsibility are just a few of the many issues that leaders must think about.
How can a leader expect to accomplish anything without a personal investment in answering the call to service? A leader needs to be driven by a greater cause. Values have always been at the heart of leadership [2], and exemplary moral fiber is the foundation of influence and moral authority.
Self-restraint forms a leader's character so that he can teach others through his experiences. The epitome of effective leadership is the ability to inspire others by sharing one's own story of how they overcame obstacles to discover and express their own purpose, basic convictions, compassion, and dedicated relationships that allow them to lead others toward a vision.
To sum it up, as a leader, you need to cultivate and hone your own unique approach to leading. The end outcome will be a reflection of your legacy which future generations can carry on.
